It is said that Adirondack chairs were made by Thomas Lee in 1903 if he wanted some outside chairs while his family has been on vacation in Westport, New York. The legend states that he cut eleven slats of timber from one piece of wood and set them together to produce the seat.

Lee understood Harry Burnell and also he knew that Burnell wanted a while and gave him the blueprint to get the seat. The seat was first known as a Westport seat. Burnell registered a patent for its design and did not comprise Lee in the patent.
