It's said that Adirondack chairs were created by Thomas Lee in 1903 if he needed some outdoor chairs while his family was on vacation in Westport, New York. The legend states that he cut eleven slats of wood from one piece of wood and place them together to create the seat.

Lee knew Harry Burnell and that he knew that Burnell wanted some income and gave him the blueprint for the seat. The seat was initially known as a Westport seat. Burnell filed a patent for its design and failed to include Lee in the patent.
